Desert Disaster Hotseating

In Literacy today we hot-seated the green group for our desert disaster story openings which we will be writing later in the week. The objective will be to write a story opening while getting a clear insight into a character. The children had prepared questions for the characters and made some detailed notes. The fruits of their labours will be seen late in the week. Photos of the characters are displayed below.

Fernando

Fernando, who is mad on sport, is always playing football in the park. Fernando is Jeremy’s uncle. He was taking him on holiday but the plane crashed. Luckily, he had a tent, food and drinks for the game. He let Dave try and help the others out of the plane but he couldn’t. Fernando was pitching the tent. Fernando is a massive football fan. He will go to every Spain and Barcelona game. He works at university to be a professional footballer. He is already good, he just wants to be better. Fernando can kick very hard, so he got the people out of the plane by kicking a ball at the window to smash it and let Dave get them out. As angry as a bull, Fernando told Jeremy to get in the tent to eat and drink. Nervously, Jeremy ate and drank to stay alive.

Dave

As worried as a rabbit, Dave is a very scruffy man at 24 year old. Dave doesn’t have a very good style sense because he wears baggy ripped jeans at the knee. Dave isn’t very good at balancing, falls over a lot and his legs have scratches and bruises all over them.

He has brown hair and a really nice smile ,that goes with his hair. When the plain crashed he was really worried, but when he realised that he was in the desert he was well equipped. In his backpack was 7 water bottles , 2 packets of dried crisps, bread and a mini radiator.

Dave liked school and enjoyed history and his travelling work. He went to uni and he learnt about travelling; he was the top of the class(there was only 10 people in the class) in learning about travelling.

Smelling like a cow pat Dave has to be one of the stinkiest people in the world. He looks like a traveller with a green dinosaur top. Dave lives at 142b Forest Road and absolutely loves going on the most exiting adventures.

Dave the traveller

As dirty as a rhino after a mud bath, 24 year old Dave was getting on a aeroplane like a tortoise in a tortoise Olympic track event, to conserve some energy before he sat back in his chair. Dave was wearing scruffy blue jeans, his enormous backpack which had fresh water, food, a tent for shelter and a phone with five spare batteries for communication. Last of all he had a mini radiator so he had everything he needed. Dave was also wearing a tattered green dinosaur T-shirt and his old sandals. Worrying a bit too much, Dave sat back in his seat while the plane plunged down in a crash landing to what could be a metropolis, Dave was worrying even more about landing in metropolis than crash landing .Dave had never liked cities he hated the noise the space and the bad things like petrol. Dave had freckles and moles all over him, blue eyes and dark brown hair. He didn’t have very good balance and kept falling over getting cuts and grazes all over his knees.

Feeling as lucky as an Olympic winning a gold medal, Dave stepped outside, feeling lucky to be alive after the crash landing to see the desert. Dave was sure he could survive he had all the things that he needed to survive in the desert, water heat and shelter. He had his first aid badge, his world badge and his gold award from scouts so it made him super sure that he could survive. Dave was an adventurer and a nature lover who liked school and studied the world at university. Lastly he started traveling at the age of 21. Dave lived at 142b Forest  Street, Liss and loved new adventures.

Daniel Watkins

As smart as a black and white cat, thirty two years old Daniel Watkins wore a black suit, with shiny leather shoes. He always carried a laptop case with his computer inside. His eyes were hazel brown that made him think he was a very serious man. With his handsome black short hair always spiked up in the morning, Daniel worked at a business company which sold brand new machinery, and lots of tools. At six foot tall, Daniel was considered a leader, a confident man. Interested in business studies since he was six years old, Daniel was good with a person, that’s why he always made a profit. Every Saturday, Daniel played golf with his other chums. He did not like the cold because he was born in a hot country, so it was unusual. Also, he disliked Simon Cowell because of his rubbish comments, Daniel thought he could do a better job.

Unfortunately, with his total arrogance, sometimes he would get angry when people asked him too many questions. It may be a shock to learn that Daniel was a family man. He lived with his wife Mary and his little two year old girl Sophie. Daniel, who was very protective, always made sure that his family was safe.

Daniel was on his way to Egypt to make a deal, when the plane got out of control. A little scared (he made sure nobody saw) that he was in the middle of the desert, he had made sure he had some supplies with him. With his confidence, he had told everybody to get out. Only fresh water and a half eaten sandwich in his laptop case was not going to last him long. Luckily, he had received his survival badge and first aid so he found it quite easy.

Fernando the football fan

Fernando is as casual as a cat, he always goes to the park to play football .He also is 23 and has just finished university. His job is an architect and he gets paid £10,000 a month. He spends the money on watching football and what’s spare goes to charity. At 23 he has a good future ahead of him. He plays football for Barca Athletico and is their star player.

You will usually find him in his 2 sizes too big Barcelona shirt, blue jeans and addidas trainers. Fernando has short brown hair and deep blue eyes. If you were to ask Fernando if he liked his job he would answer,

“Of course I do and I’m lucky to have one”

An integral team player, he always relied on other people to do things for him and trusted them to help him survive the crash. Petrified, when the plane crashed he had a panic attack.

Daniel Watkins

As smart as a brand new suit, the self confident thirty two year old Daniel Watkins first started in CCC business when he was twenty years old. Daniel Watkins is very protective over his thirty year old wife, Mary and his one and a half year old daughter, Sophie.

When Daniel was younger he liked playing football, but when he was twelve his father told him that football was a rough sport and he would be much better playing golf, so he plays golf now.

As clever as a calculator Daniel was very confident when the plane crashed in the desert as he got a survival badge when he was younger at scouts. In his backpack Daniel had a packet of salty crisps and a bottle of mineral water in his briefcase  so he shared it with everyone.

As arrogant as a clown Daniel Watkins has black hair with a long overall face and he always wears a black shiny suit.

Sarah Dana Smith

As pretty as an angel,Sarah had had sparkling blue eyes and a tanned face. Her hair came down just below her shoulders. As white as a swan, her t-shirt was crisp and her scarf was as blue as the sea. If she ever won an archery match she had the ability to make the loser feel good about them selves. Kind and sweet, she was loveliness itself. If anyone criticised her,she had the power to block it out. She only wanted the best for other people.

When the plane crashed,Sarah blacked out. The reason for this was because a seatbelt hit her on the head. When she woke up,she realised they were marooned and panicked. Back at home she supported two charities; Cancer and tender hugs for orphaned children. She tried to donate as much as she could, but she didn’t have enough money so she could not give as much as she would have liked to.

She was a journalist and liked something to get her teeth into. The reason she came was to see the opening of a newly found pyramid.

Desert Disaster character descriptions

In Literacy this week we have been looking at stories and the character descriptions that go with them. We examined the characters of Miss Honey and Mrs Trunchbull in Roald Dahl’s Mathilda. Next, we created a story plan for a story called ‘Desert Disaster’ which involved a plane crash. We used children from the green group to invent characters and hotseated them to find out about their appearance, personalities, abolities and histories. After making detailed notes, we wrote our descriptions. Below are the characters the children wrote about, followed by Emma’s character description.

Sara Dana Smith

Sarah was as elegant as a model, in a snowy white shirt and blue scarf that are her trade mark clothes. She has long, loose golden brown hair, forget-me-not eyes and a birth mark like a chocolate  splodge next to her right eyebrow. As great as C.S.Lewis, Sarah was an exceptionally good journalist.

Sarah, a keen sports player, blacked out in the plane crash. The reason she was on the plane was her salary was running low, so she went to report a newly discovered pyramid, sadly leaving her white cat, Snowdrop,  at home.

Not a completely naturally calm person, she panicked after the plane crash and had to be calmed down because she thought they were going to die. When they found the oasis, she was exhausted and over joyed. When she got home she wrote about her ordeal and broke local records.
