Citizenship Week – Sports Posters

With recent figures showing that adult participation in sport has actually dropped since the London Olympics, we decide to create posters to advertise the benefits of various sports. Here are some of the best.

Performance poems – Jasmine

This week we have been creating our own performance poems based on animals. We read a poem called ‘The song of the eagle’ and used it as an inspiration for our writing. We tried to use powerful verbs, similes and metaphors in our poetry. Here’s Jasmine’s:

Butterfly

She flutters around the sky

Like she owns the land

Sitting on a flower

Confused by the rain.

Dancing around the sky,

Wings are rainbows,

Flapping in the evening sunlight.

Showing them off to the world

As the sun goes down

And the moon comes out

She lies ready to sleep

Dancing around the sky,

Wings are rainbows,

Flapping in the evening sunlight.

Showing them off to the world

As light as a feather

She floats through the morning air

Like a single leaf falling through the atmosphere

Her flimsy wings flutter

And her slender body swirls

She’s an outstanding beauty in the air

Everything a bare pure beauty.

Dancing around the sky,

Wings are rainbows,

Flapping in the evening sunlight.

Showing them off to the world

The most beautiful butterfly I’ve ever seen.

Raps – Jasmine

Cheese the dragon

 C’mon everybody listen around

You don’t even have to pay a pound

This little dragon makes a lot of noise

Whilst he plays with his favourite toys

Now let me introduce him, his name’s Cheese

Guess what? He sometimes eats our keys

He likes vegetables, but prefers meat

He always eats it to a steady beat

I know most people are afraid of him

But he has never ever committed a sin

I hoped you like the story of my best friend

We’re gonna be together till the very end!

Alternative Cinderella – Jasmine’s story

Cinderella – The Truth (no lies)

Once upon a time…..Anastasia, this is my story so I’m going to start it in a sophisticated way.  Right let’s get going. Good evening young reader, this is me, Drusilla, a young girl who is perhaps the prettiest in the world. I unfortunately I live with one terrible girl, Cinderella. I even fear the sound of her name. Ok so this is how my abhorrent life started: my lovely father passed away on my 16th birthday, oh, I can’t bear to think about my dear father any longer. Let’s get back to my inspiring story. So after that sad tragedy my beautiful mother (probably where I get my charm) married my weak step father, who brought along Cinderella. She is such a lazy, un-responsible person, never helps out with the chores. So my tremendous house is cluttered up with Cinderella’s junk!

One day she even told me I do nothing but laze around on my big bum (I will have you know my bum is a perfect shape) and one time she even accused my sister of putting ants in her bed. Don’t you think this behaviour is unacceptable? Well I do. She always pretends to be sweet old Cindy when visitors come; they all say she’s beautiful. Maybe they’re blind who knows? They just stare at me; maybe they’re shocked at my outstanding beauty for words. Sometimes I feel lonely as Cinderella gets all the attention, so that’s why you should feel sorry for me.

Anyway let’s get back on track, I got a golden letter, soft to the touch, addressed to my family (and me of course!) It said we were invited to the royal ball organized by the family themselves as the prince was searching for a wife (most probably going to be me). Once I ordered Cinderella to get my beautiful gowns and put my make-up on I was ready to go, I looked ever so eye-catchingly beautiful. My mother even ordered a carriage to go with my princess look. We drove to the ball leaving Cinderella at home to fish her chores. Once me, my mother and my sister arrived we walked in surprised not to be ‘arrred’ and ‘ooohhed’ at (they were probably just jealous).

The ball was outstanding; I had excitement fizzing in me when I was dancing with the lush prince. Until this beautiful girl walked in (still not as beautiful as me obviously) she had a white crystal clear ball gown and the most beautiful glass slippers. She stole the prince off me and they danced to their hearts content. The clock struck twelve and suddenly the mystery girl (or so I thought) ran off swiftly she left one of her glass slippers behind. I thought I would take it but the prince got there first. He took it inside; this is where I thought I would leave.

At home Anastasia and I moaned about the girl stealing my prince.

“Oh, I just don’t understand why that charming prince would go for a stupid little girl like her.” Anastasia whimpered.  We heard a shuffle of the key and saw Cinderella come in, in her unfashionable rags. My mother asked her where she had been. She hesitated but eventually said in her squeaky voice,

“I was fetching some vegetables from the patch.” That night I though about the prince and the unknown girl but eventually fell asleep.

The next morning the prince every house in the kingdom (I know as I watch his every move) because he was looking for the girl in the glass slipper. When he finally came to our house, we locked Cinderella in the cellar just in case. I tried the glass slipper on,

“Ughh ouch!” I cried in despair. It didn’t fit! I was horrified at the sight of my red swollen foot. Then Anastasia tried it on, it barely fitted.

“Ahhhhhh” we heard coming from the window, it was Cinderella, she had somehow got out of the window. Oh I remember, I was laying on my sunbed and had to open the window to get the spider out. Damn! Oh sorry I’m sure you don’t want to hear about my personal life just yet, that will be in the next issue. Any way back to the story. She snatched the glass slipper off of poor Anastasia’s foot and then slipped it on her ugly one and guess what? It fitted! (Just my luck!) I bet she’s lying, I bet she planned it all along

“Ekkkk!” my mother screamed in terror as the prince gave Cinderella a full on kiss!

My mother started ‘liking’ Cinderella, I bet it was just because of the money, she’d better share it with me.

“Oh Cindy, I always knew you would marry the prince. I’m always right!” my mother said with a false smile. Cinderella was taken away in a horse-drawn carriage.   I’m so not jealous though (maybe a little.) How horrible is this? She didn’t even say goodbye.

“I can’t believe that she stole our prince, that four eyed freak.” Anastasia wailed.

“Don’t worry he will come back for me, and I will be living in his luxury household.” I explained

By then I found out who the ‘mystery’ girl was. I can’t believe who it is. Cinderella!  That lying cheat! I honestly despise that girl. I’m just glad she’s gone. But who’s going to do the cleaning now? Oh yeah I didn’t clean up It was little old Cindy.

“Ahhhhhh” my mother screamed in disgust at the thought of Cinderella.

So do you get this treacherous story now, the real one? Cinderella gets a perfect life. I hear you say; ‘What about you?’ I don’t get anything and I’m the one who deserves a luxury life but no, stupid Cinderella gets the life I deserve. So that’s it, I’ve got to massage my mums feet now.

The purpose

I want the reader to feel like Drusilla’s a disgusting person who only thinks about herself and what she looks like. However I want them to have just a small little bit of sympathy towards her.

Points of view: Wilf Wolf & Scarlet Hood Letters – Amelia, Jasmine, Kayleigh, Max, Penny, Isobel &Hannah

A letter from Scarlett to Wilf

Wilf

I am writing to inform you that if you get near my family you are dead! I might be accused of wolf slaughter but at least my mind will be at rest. You walked into that court room and spoke as if you weren’t bothered about the case held against you. You’ve walked out with the greatest reputation any wolf could have, but it can all change.

Everyone knows your guilty, are you seriously stupid enough to think (wait, you are) that they will believe you? You’re devious and sly, you can’t get past me! Everyone knows you manipulated my gran, who wouldn’t harm anyone especially a wolf like you. She has never been bothered about wolves and she will never be. Why, out of all the people in the world did you manipulate my gran? I could tell the minute gran walked into the courtroom you were happy, your eyes twinkled and you started smiling and then she started being soft on you. You don’t just lie but you try and split up families.

Do you expect people to believe that you own a pizzeria? That’s the oldest trick in the book. Is the courier pretend or real? Seriously, who believes you, only your friends, but oh I forgot, you don’t have any otherwise they would have been at the court supporting you. Who has ever heard of a pizza delivery wolf? No- one and that is the way it will always be. My gran would share it with me, as we always have shared things because that is the way it has been; she didn’t share the pizza which means she never bought one.

To sum up my point, you are guilty and everyone knows, you have nothing better to do than kill people, which is disgraceful. I hope you understand my feeling of you lying in court when you know all of this is true.

Yours sincerely

Scarlett Hood

P.S  You’re dead meat!

Non-chronological report about Elephants

Elephants

Elephants are the largest animals in the animal kingdom. With their muscly body they can weigh up to 6048 kg. Their trunks have 150000 muscles and no bones. Therefore it can carry up to four gallons of water.

Behaviour

During the dry season Elephants use their large ears to fan themselves. They also use their trunks to gather water, to spay to relieve themselves from the sun.

Unlike most animals, elephants have a long memory span, therefore when they’re on the move they can remember where lakes and water holes are. Their brain is the largest out of the mammals weighing 26 kg this means they are very intelligent.

Elephants are very good at swimming, they use their trunks as a snorkel (it helps them keep cool in the dry season).

 Diet

Elephants eat large quantities of vegetation; they take up nearly 18 hours a day eating. Elephants use their long and flexible trunks to pluck up leaves and their tusks to tear branches which causes enormous damage.

They mostly eat: small plants, bushes, fruits, twigs, roots and tree bark. However they prefer to eat tree bark as they like the texture.

Calves

Male elephants are at their mostfertile between the ages of 25-45. Normally females give birth to one calve as it takes nearly two years to give birth.

Elephants are gentle but can be harmful when they want to. There are three different species including: Bush elephants, Forest elephants and Asian elephants.

Raps – Jasmine

Curry is the best

Yo, curry is my favourite food,

It puts me in a very good mood,

My favourite is chicken korma,

If I could I’d eat it in the sauna.

With curry I like to eat rice,

Cuz it tastes super nice,

I love it with chilli sauce,

Sometimes I feed it to my horse.

I eat curry all the time,

Even with a slice of lime,

I wish I lived in a land of curry,

Instead of livin’ in rural Surrey.

Now I’ve proved I love it to bits,

I’m gonna have some with my chips,

Cheers for listening to my rap,

And now I’m gonna have a nap.

Conservation Reports – Sam & Jasmine

Conservation report

Class AS have been looking around the school to identify what they have been wasting. They have been wanting to develop this school into a more eco-friendly environment.

Computers

Problem: In Liss Junior School the computers have been left on when not in use. This wastes electricity that leads on to wasting money. This electricity could be provided for I.C.T lessons in the school but instead it’s wasted.

Solution: To make sure all electricity isn’t being wasted they should provide eco-monitors to turn off the computers when not in use.

 Printer ink

Problem: When printing things the pupils waste colour printer ink by printing things in colour when not needed to be in colour.

Solution: Firstly a certain amount of paper should be entitled to each class for the week. Secondly limit the amount of time they get to print things.

Wasting paper

Problem: In wet day play A4 plain paper is wasted, this is unnecessary. Pupils draw pictures on the paper; they use the plain paper for making things such as paper airplanes.

Solution: There should be a scrap paper draw provided in every class. The paper should only be in use to those doing work. Inform pupils about this.

Food left by amphitheatre

Problem: At lunch food is left on or near the amphitheatre. This could cause danger of slipping on the unexpected food. Also there leaves a nasty stench around the amphitheatre.

Solution:  Make sure there is a bin near by so any left overs can be thrown away. They could use the compost as a bin too so any food such as banana peels can be used as compost which provides nutrition for their crops.

Wasted soap

Problem: Firstly, people smear soap on the mirrors and walls also they break them up into little pieces. Secondly, they throw soap on the floor and waste it. It can be a danger because it makes the floor slippy.

Solution: In the toilets they can have soap that comes out of a bottle also this prevents using too much soap.

If these recommendations are followed pupils will have an even better school.
