Ancient Greek Olympics

In the Ancient Greek Olympic games there were lots of events. That leaves us with some questions, like how many people took part? Were there lots of dangers and what prizes did the winners get? To answer these questions and many more read this non – chronological report.

Events

Running was the oldest and most popular event in history of the games. But it wasn’t an easy event either. The track was made out of clay covered sand and was 192 meters. Horse racing, the basic horses race was run over 1200 meters. In another race the rider would dismount and run the rest of the race. This tells us that most of the people that took park were very fit and fast runners. Jockeys rode bareback so there were often lots or accidents.  The horses owners often rented their horses out for the races.

Prizes

Lots of people wanted to win, why they would take part otherwise.  The winners were presented with an olive wreath and some woollen ribbons. If they were that great they might even have a statue made in there honour.   The games where held in honour of Zeus.     The games were also held in honour of Pelops a great hero.

Modern Olympics

Sadly, the Ancient Olympics ended by AD 395, when Olympia was destroyed by not one but two violent earthquakes. In AD 1896 a smart French man called   Mr Borden Pierre Courbet was inspired by the cleaver idea of the ancient games and organized the first Morden Olympic Games.

Were the events dangerous?

Most of the time they were because in the Horse racing event accidents were common. The jockeys rode bareback so when the horses was in full gallop it was very bouncy and the riders often fell off , and if they wanted to stay on they would have to have great balance.  The track was 1200 meters long. And the worst was it was very bumpy.

Were the people who took part  important?

Most of the people who took part were important because they were fit and in good shape so they would have had to fight in their wars.  Pelops, a great hero and a fighter in their wars was honoured, and because of him and Zeus, the Olympic Games started.

How many people took part?

Lots of people took part because there was a lot of stadiums and lots of events. Judging by the sizes of the arenas there must have been thousands of athletes taking part in the games; after all it is famous these days, with all the Modern Olympics it has sure made a reputation for itself.

Conclusion

Yes the events were dangerous and lots of people took part. The winners got Olive wreaths, woollen ribbons, palm branches and maybe even a statue made in there honour. And we should give the Ancient Greeks for getting the Olympics started for us.

Thank you Ancient Greeks for the fantastic games today.

Wrestling: There were three different types of Wrestling. There was upright Wrestling and in this, too win you had to throw your opponent on too the floor three times. Next there was ground wrestling which went on until gave in. And then there was the pankiation which was when you could do anything to your opponent but biting and eye gouging.

Chariot Racing and Horse Racing: Chariot racing and Horse Racing were quite similar but in Chariot races you rode on a Chariot pulled by horses.

What did the winners win? The many people who won games at the Ancient Greek Olympics were presented with an olive wreath, palm branches and woollen ribbons. If they were lucky they might even have a statue made of them.

Sadly Olympia (where the games were held) was destroyed in a major earthquake in a 395AD, but fortunately the games live on today.

The Ancient Olympic Games

The Olympic Games started in Ancient Greece in 776Bc and were decided to be held every four years. The Olympics were meant to get fitness and health levels high as they could for the condition of war and in honour of the king god Zeus. The Olympic Games were held in Olympia because Olympia was a city and was one of the cities with 9 important buildings one of them was the temple of Zeus.

Nudity

In Ancient Greece men were naked at the Olympic Games this used to amuse most children and made them watch the Olympics more often. Their was said to be a story about why the Greeks were naked in the Olympics and it was about a widow called Callipatira that went to the Olympics to join in with the events with her son, husband and brothers. When her son one she was overjoyed and the disguise that she was wearing fell of. The penalty was death but because her son, husband and brothers all won their events she survived. From then on the rules were changed to be naked so they could spot any women. This was why in the Olympics you had to be naked.

Olympia

Olympia was the site sacred to the god Zeus. In Olympia there were 9 important buildings, these were places like the temple of Zeus, the temple of Hera and other places like treasuries and offices. The Olympic Games were held in Olympia every 4 years and were the oldest games in Ancient Greece but were still very popular.

Women

Women were officially of limits to the Olympics and were only aloud to watch, but if you were married you weren’t aloud anywhere near the Olympics and had to go more than a certain distance away. The women decided to have a festival of there own called the Heraia. This was held every 4 years at the time of the Olympics and included 3 running events depending on your age, this was in the Honour of the queen goddess Hera.

Events

There were 6 events in the Olympic Games (some of these 6 events were not included in the Olympics today and some of them are still here today). Running was one of the most popular events there were 3 races that you had to compete in. The first race was were you did 1 length of the track and was called the stade, the next race took more effort and was where you had to 2 lengths of the track and was called the diaulos, finally the last race took the most effort and you did 20 to 24 lengths of the track and was called the dolichos. In some of these races you would wear armour and a shield for extra weight and made it more difficult. Wrestling was popular as well and was an exiting event. The event went on until somebody gave up out of the 2 that were playing the match so it took a long time for a match to finish this event took lots of strength and stamina to win and was really tough event. The Pentathlon was the most difficult event and was where you took part in a series of mini events, running, wrestling, javelin, jumping and discuss. The Pentathlon was designed to find the best all round athlete and was a very tough challenge. Boxing was an event that went up to taking several hours and ended when 1 of the 2 contestants was knocked unconscious or gave up. It was similar to wrestling and also needed strength and stamina to succeed. Chariot racing was when you got pulled by 4 horses in a cart or you could go in a team of 2 each with 2 horses, collisions were common and normally happened at corners. Horse racing was a quick event and was when you were on a horse going round a track of about 1200m, if you fell of you could get serious injuries.

The games were held for five days and they were in August or September

They made their living by representing the city states at the various games. Athletes could also reap many material rewards.

A city gained prestige by sponsoring a successful athlete, and would pay him well. Prizes were simple. The overall winner won a simple crown of wild olive, their names were recorded and they were allowed to wear purple robes like a king.

The first Olympics was in 776 BC to honour the king god Zeus; from then on it was held every 4 years in Olympia, Greece

Attendance

No married women were aloud to watch or even (except for the powerful priestess of diyonisis for without her the games could not take place) and even non-married women were looked down upon. Even though these measures were put in place slaves and non- Greek men were admitted.

Competitors

Only High status (naked) Greek men were aloud to compete. The punishment for a woman competitor was being thrown off of the tallest cliff, but one woman was spared because her brothers, father and son did so well.

The Events

The first sport was running, the track was 129m. Like the modern games there was more than one run: The stade (one lap), the dialous (two laps) and the dolichos (20-24 laps). As the games evolved more sports were introduced, one of these was chariot racing, this was a scene of as many as 40 chariots with 2 -4 horses bolting around 2 posts in the ground, so as you would imagine there were often collisions. But the most gruelling event was the pentathlon with 5 of the Olympic sports; running, wrestling, discus, jumping and the javelin throw.  This was designed to find the best all round athlete.

As old as the hills, the Olympics is the oldest and most important competition. The modern Olympics started in 1896 similar in many ways to the ancient games and will carry on for much longer the next in London then in Rio de Janeiro

The Ancient Olympic Games

The Ancient Olympic games were very interesting. They held a small range of games but now we have a wide range. If you want to know more please read here.

Olympia

Olympia held the first Olympic games in 776 BC. The stadium or sanctuary was

150-200 metres long. All the competitors had to arrive about 1 month before the Olympic games started. This was so the athletes could train while being looked over by the officials.

Women

Women were not allowed to compete in the Olympic games. Married women weren’t even allowed near Olympia when the games were on. So instead women held a small festival called “Heraia.” Like the men’s Olympics it was held every 4 years only it was held in honour of the goddess Hera. The festival had 3 running events for women and girls of all ages.

The events

Running is the oldest event in any Olympic Games. The track was about 200 metres long. It was made of clay covered in sand.

Wrestling had 3 events: upright wrestling, ground wrestling and the “pankraton.”This was the most dangerous.

The pentathlon was a small competition holding 5 athletic events: running, wrestling, jumping, discus and javelin throwing.

A boxing contest could go on for several hours. It would end when someone

was knocked un-consious or gave in.

Chariot races usually had 2 or 4 horses in a team. There were about 40 chariots in each race. The chariots had to race around a course 12 times and crashes were common.
