Calshot 2023: Day 3

Another full on day at Calshot! There were lots of children still asleep when we knocked on doors at 7.10am and there were still some asleep when we came around for room inspections at 7.25am.

After a cooked breakfast, everyone perked up and it was another busy morning at Calshot. Groups 1 – 3 had on-site orienteering followed by either cycle skills, ski 2 or archery whereas groups 4 – 6 had either ski 2 or archery followed by epic engineering.

Lunch was the usual pasta or jacket potato options, but you could also have a very delicious peri peri chicken wrap or the veggie equivalent.

Groups 3 – 6 were kayaking or sailing during the afternoon. This was a great challenge as the wind was quite gusty, but the children listened carefully to the instructors and were soon whizzing around in the Solent – it was genuinely impressive to watch. Groups 1 and 2 both had archery sessions and then either ski 2 or cycle skills.

Dinner was a full roast followed by a yoghurt – style ice cream. The evening activity was a film night and the children were settling down to watch Despicable Me.

One final note: Mr Stanley has been reading to the pupils Stanley Yelnats guide to digging holes to the pupils each night. Today he achieved a notable first when one boy (who shall remain unnamed) actually fell asleep during the story! There will be some tired children returning home to Liss tomorrow afternoon.

Maths Activities

Dear Year 6,

I hope that you are all well and coping admirably with the lockdown. I have added some activities below which we would be covering if you were at school. Mr Stanley and I are currently working on preparing activities for the period after Easter.

Enjoy the maths and stay safe!

Best wishes

Miss Beavis

Sensational newspaper reports – Holes

In English, Rowan Class have been looking at the escape scene from Holes. We looked at the different ways that the press would have covered it and decided to try and write some sensationalist articles. The tone would be either for or against the boys actions. As a class we tried to think of emotive language and catchy headlines – particularly with alliteration. Here are the children’s articles:

Additional stanzas in the style of Timothy Winters by Charles Causley

Since the start of this term we have been looking at the poetry of Charles Causley. Last week, the class produced some excellent homework where they researched the life of Causley. This week, the children have been looking carefully at one of Causley’s greatest poems – Timothy Winters.

The poem paints a grim picture of a boy who has been neglected, and the struggles he faces in life. As a class we identified all of the problems that Timothy encountered and used this to inspiration to write our own additional stanzas. Below, you will find the original poem, then some examples from Rowan Class children.

Timothy Winters

 Timothy Winters is rather confused

Of why he is always being abused.

His Grandma and father are always drunk

Which makes Timothy Winters smell like a skunk.

His feet are like blocks of shiny ice,

And his poor house is filled with mice.

He’s like a waterfall, crying, crying

And deep inside he knows he is dying.

Timothy’s house is always cold.

The small bits of food are covered in mould.

At school he would always sneak in and steal,

He has never had a decent meal.

When he gets home, he looks for a drink,

But can only find drips in the kitchen sink.

He always has to go to bed,

With bloody feet and an aching head.

On the next morning he goes to church,

And waits behind a silver birch.

He walks in, trying not to think

Of when he gets home what he has to drink.

By Lois L

Timothy Winters

His dad and grandma are always drunk,

So he smells just like a skunk.

Sometimes it looks like he is confused,

It’s probably because he’s always abused.

When he was younger he always was crying,

Inside it looks like he is secretly dying.

Timothy Winters sits in the cold ,

Watching the sink get clogged up with mould.

Sometimes he thinks about going out to steal;

Just so he can have a decent meal.

His abusive father always drinks ;

Instead of fixing the  kitchen sink.

He dreams for a better day,

But that’s easier to dream than to say.

People say he has the flu ,

But I doubt that that is true.

To him people are always mean,

Even when he tries not to be seen.

So to Timothy Winters we will pray,

No matter what other people say.

Euan

Timothy Winters

When Timothy is home there is nothing to drink,

Just drips of water coming from the kitchen sink.

Timothy Winters is secretly crying,

Deep inside he knows he is dying.

When he’s at school, he doesn’t want to be seen,

All the children there are rude and mean.

Timothy Winters is always confused,

Timothy Winters is constantly abused.

Sometimes, because of the lack of his meals,

Timothy Winters has to steal.

Timothy’s house is cold as ice,

His home is filled with rats and mice.

Timothy’s father is always drunk,

He never bathes and smells like a skunk.

The bread he eats is stale and cold,

It’s crunchy and disgusting with splodges of mould.

Old Man Winters misses Timothy’s mother,

But Timothy Winters doesn’t bother.

Timothy Winters is awfully shy,

Sometimes he wishes he could just die.

Streatley Day 3

Streatley day 3

Today we got up at 6.30 because the fire alarm went off, everybody bombarded out of their rooms and rushed really fast down the stairs. We thought the door was locked because we were pushing it instead of pulling it. We all then realised that we had to pull it. The reason the fire alarm went off is because Mr Burford was putting on spray on deodorant!

We had breakfast at 7:30 and left at 8:30.

It took one hour to get to park and ride so we could get a bus from there to the Natural History Museum and PittRivers Museum. First we looked around PittRivers and saw some horrible shrunken human and monkey heads. Next this lady took us up to the next floor of the museum to do some activities. We played guess who I am, where you had to guess who the person was using artefacts.

When we got to the Natural History Museum we held cockroaches, millipedes and a tarantula called Dolores. After that we walked around the museum trying to find a picture we wanted to draw. After we had drawn our pictures we got the teachers to try and find our pictures.

After that we had to draw a Dodo on a piece of sugar paper. Next we went upstairs and saw some honey bees then we went around the rest of the upstairs and saw a lifespan of an ant and a wasp.

Once we finished at the museum we got on the public bus and changed buses at the carpark and when we got back to the hostel we had delicious fish and chips.

Experimenting with sustainable building materials

Class AS have been looking at different forms of building as part of The School Grounds We’d Like project. We were particularly interested in the way that Kafuro Primary School can make structures out of cane, banana twine and banana leaves. We researched stories of people who have built structures out of plastic bottles and decided to try the building technique for ourselves.

Working with Mr Haycock, Class AS learned how to make cement and papercrete (a more efficient and environmentally friendly mortar) and began building walls with plastic bottle filled with coloured water. After leaving them to set for 24 hours we found that the structures created were very strong.

With this knowledge at least one of our groups is planning to build a structure using plastic bottles. More details later in the week.

Desert Disaster – Daisy

Last week the children hotseated characters for a story opening. This week they have been writing, editing and refining their story openings. Here’s Daisy’s desert disaster:

The desert disaster
It was a stifling hot June afternoon and the passengers who were on board the flight to Mexico felt like they were inside a radiator. The seats were so full you couldn’t see a dab of dingy cream and grey. Some children chattered excitedly to each other as they fanned themselves with their fingers, while others sat sweltering (but uncomplaining) reading their books. Unfortunately, Brianna Jenkins’s children weren’t doing either.
“Sit down, Demetra! And you, Briony. You’re getting on my nerves!” Brianna cried, struggling to talk to her new friend, Maria, without getting distracted. Giggling, the children collapsed at Brianna’s bright suede high heels, their long hair getting tangled under the seat. After a minute or two they calmed down.

“Finally!” exclaimed Brianna, shaking her head. “Anyway, I’m going to visit my Mother and my little sister, Rose. I haven’t seen them since my birthday, and that was in December! Why are you going to Mexi….oh, I must tell you, she lives in the capital city there. What’s it called again? Oh, it doesn’t matter, because you must know…WHAT’S HAPPENING?!?!?” Brianna’s rosy face turned white with terror. The plane was jolting back and forth! Brianna’s ebony and sapphire bracelet slipped off her wrist. As scared as a rabbit in some headlights, she rushed to retrieve it.

“Don’t get out of your seats!” a middle aged business woman screamed. She was wearing a short jet black skirt and a navy jacket. Slowly, her tawny bun unravelled as she ran over to Brianna, who was now reaching out for her bracelet… C-REAK! Crying, Bobby (Brianna’s baby) woke up. The plane was tipping! Screaming, Brianna and Stephanie the businesswoman started to slide down the plane… Everything went black.
Opening her eyes, Brianna realised where they had crashed. They were in a desert, and all Brianna could see was sand for miles around. How were they going to get out?
