Extended Victorian Stories – William L

A mad dash for victory

Chapter 1: The Beginning

It was 1852 and there were two men. One was called Richard and the other was called Bill. They were both about to join the army. One day Bill said:

“This is probably going to be the biggest step of our lives. I think this because we have been playing Cricket and Football and now we are joining the army.”

“True,” said Richard. “But this is what we have wanted to do all our lives so we are doing it.”

The next day Richard and Bill went down to the training camp to sign up. When they got there they were instructed to go down to the mangers office.

“Hello. You must be the new recruits called Richard and Bill. I hear you want to join the cavalry but also want to be able to cover for people in the infantry,” said the manger in a meaningful voice.

“Yes that is us,” replied Richard in his best ‘posh voice’.

“Ok then we will get you started on your training tomorrow.”

The next day Richard and Bill went back to the training camp so they could get started on the training for the real thing.

“Right boys let’s get to work. Everyone choose a Stallion so we can do some basic horse riding lessons. Everyone give your Stallion a name,” said the instructor in a stern and firm but friendly voice.

Richard, who liked the colour black, sprinted straight for a Matt black one and named it Blackey. Bill ran straight for a dark brown one and called it George. There were 18 other boys training to be in the cavalry only 10 would get to go into battle for real. Everyone was also going to get training to be an infantry man. To begin with they would learn to ride a horse. After they had done this the best 15 would be picked to go onto the shooting range. Here they would practise fighting with swords and rifles with blanks in. the top 13 from this would go to the final stage of training. Next the people who got to the final stage would practise fighting while on a horse. Finally the best 10 would go into the cavalry. The rejected 10 people would either have to try again or join the infantry.

Richard got through but Bill did not.

“Better luck next time Bill,” Richard said in a kind voice.

“Well done Richard,” Bill replied in a slightly sad voice.

Chapter 2: Prepare For Battle

The next day Richard went back to the training camp.

“Right. Let’s get to work,” came a voice from a big man. His voice was as loud as a tiger.

“I think he must be the instructor,” Richard whispered to the boy next to him.

“Think you must be right Richard,” the boy replied.

STOP TALKING IN THE RANKS!” shouted the instructor. “IF YOU DO IT AGAIN I WILL HAVE YOU PUT ON A CHARGE. Now I will carry on what I started saying before I was so rudely interrupted by those two boys over there.” He glared in Richards’s direction. “I hear you all have passed the basic training. Well done. Now we are going to do some more complicated stuff. Firstly we are going to improve the skills you have learnt already. There are 100 of you so you are going to be put into 4 smaller groups of 25 each with a separate instructor. This will mean you will be able to learn more over the time we have. After two months of training you will be told which regiment you will be in.”

Richard was put in a group with a very nice instructor who had a lot of friends and respect. After the people in Richard’s group had got to know each other they started improving the skills they had already learnt. This took five days. On the sixth day of training they started on the more complicated bits. This included fighting with swords and rifles while on horseback and how to dodge rifle bullets really well while on foot. After another 3 weeks of training the trainees then had to complete a quiz. Next the questions that people most commonly got wrong would be mentioned time and time again in training so they would eventually be planted in the trainee’s brain.

After the two months everyone got to know which regiment they would be in. 10 boys, including Richard were put into regiment 22.

Chapter 3: A Mad Dash For Victory

When Richard went to his new regiment after having a couple of weeks at home he was greeted by a friendly sight: his horse Blackly. The regiments general was called Sam Harsh. His surname half told you what his personality was. When he got cross he was really harsh but when you behaved well he was really nice to you and gave out rewards.

“Right. Tomorrow we will be heading into battle with five other regiments. Most of you will be in the right or left flanks but some of you will be in the two centre flanks, either right or left. It was Friday the day of the attack. Richard had been put in the left centre flank because he was one of the better fighters.

Shouting they rode into battle feeling confident they would win. The first hour went well with the other side loosing 7000 people and horses from its mammoth army of 56000 while Richards side only loosing 1000 from its army of 40000. Three hours later they were not so sure that they were going to win. There were now only 17000 men left and 25000 left in the other side. Suddenly one of the enemy grabbed Richard from the ranks and dragged him into the middle of the enemy’s camp.

“If you do not give us the information we want when we want it we will kill you!” shouted the enemy’s commander in a voice like a lion’s roar.

“Help!” shouted Richard in a desperate voice.

“Tell us your plans or we will kill you!”

“Never!”

“Fine we will kill you!”

“No you shall not!”

“How will you stop us? We’re going to kill you and that is that! Now kill him!!!!”

Suddenly there was the biggest noise ever. It was the sound of charging cavalry and thousands of guns firing. Shouting Richard jumped onto Blackly and trampled through the enemy ranks. This was the home straight as the enemy commander got shot right in the middle of the head and was killed instantly.

Within two hours the battle was over and won. The army commander came running over to Richard and decided that he should be the commander of both the centre flanks

“Richard. I have decided that you should be the commander of both centre flanks. I want you to make a speech right here. It can be as long or short as you like. Now step up onto this old crate.”

“I am very privileged to be the commander of both centre flanks. Thank-you to the army commander for putting me into this position after just one battle. I hope you all do well and rise up positions and one day you may be where I am or possibly even higher. It does not take much to get up to this position. All it needs is for you to do something really brave or for you to have on really good battle. Now once again I thank Sam for putting me into this position.”

“I agree with Richard. It does not take much to move up a position. We all did really well in that battle even if we did lose a lot of our army. We should be able to build it back up before the next battle. Here are the marks for each flank out of 20: left 16, right 17, left centre 17 and right centre 19. I hope we have time to celebrate this massive win.

Informal language to Formal Language – William L

Yo man. I was walkin down the street when this kid ran in front of me to stop me yeah! As he went into ze bozzer I realised he was my friend yeah! I went in and started to chill out with my bros. As I left I got caught and this window broke and I fell into this Lambo. The guys who attacked me stuffed my pockets with lots of dosh from the local money store. They then rushed away in the Lambo. I felt cream crackered and these guys made it look like I was drunk by killing the motor in front on the tarmac yeah! Ye guys stuffed me in the driver’s seat and spilled the dosh on the road. There was so much you could swim in it. Cos of this the rozzers arrived and stuffed me in the back of their meat van.

Your Honour, my client informs me that he was walking down the street. He walked by the local hostelry. Then my client realised one of his friends that he was meeting was there so he went in and bought some squash. As he left he was kidnapped and stuffed through a window of a stolen Lamborghini. The Lamborghini was stolen by the kidnappers. They had stolen some cash from the Santander and stuffed it in his pockets. Then they started to speed off. They then framed him by crashing into the car in front. Next they stuffed him into the driver’s seat and through the cash all over the road. Before he knew it he was being driven off to the police station in the back of a police van with an escort.

Cloudbusting explanations

In literacy we have been looking at explanation texts and decided to use something a little bit different  to stimulate ideas. We looked at Kate Bush’s Cloudbusting video and asked the children to write an explanation based on what they saw. Peter and William have provided two good early examples:

How to use the cloud busting machine.

The cloud busting machine is a very heavy machine, but it is the easiest way to control the weather.

How do you position it?

It is a very heavy machine. Two people pull and push it up a hill. It needs to be up a hill because it is closer to the clouds.

How do you position it?

Firstly, there is a green button on the left hand side and that will start it. As a result it will splutter and make a bit of smoke.

How do you control it?

The lever on the left hand side it will suck the clouds in and the lever on the right will blow them out. If something goes wrong there is there is a big red button on the panel that will suddenly stop it.

How to use the Cloud Busting Machine.

What is the Cloud Busting Machine?

The Cloud Busting Machine is the best way to control the weather. It sucks in clouds and then fires out rain clouds when rain is most needed. Experts explain how it works.

Where do I position it?

It is best located on top of a hill. Two people pull and push. Sometimes more than two people are used. When it is in position the brakes are applied so it does not roll down the hill.

How does it suck in the clouds?

Firstly the operator locates the lever left of centre and pulls it down. He then pushes it up and down very quickly 25 times. If the operator does not do this the machine will start overheating and will eventually explode. Once he has done this the machine will start sucking in clouds.

How does it make the clouds wet?

Afterwards the operator will find the smaller wheel of the Cloud Busting Machine and spin it. This results in the clouds becoming soaked.

How does it fire out the rain clouds?

Once the operator has done this he turns the big wheel. This causes the clouds to come back.

Poems about woods

This week in literacy the children have been working with Miss Flower in looking at different forms of poetry. They created word banks for poems about woods and then worked in pairs to create their poems in a range of styles. There was some terrific ideas and use of vocabulary as shown below.

Oliver Twist Playscripts

In Literacy, over the past fortnight, we have been looking at playscripts while watching a film version of Oliver Twist. we decided to write playscripts either turning part of the film into a script or writing an additional scene. Some examples of the children’s work is displayed below.

Lady Macbeth’s final letter – William L

My dearest husband,

I am writing to you as I am on the verge of death. I feel like life has no meaning for me any more and you would also be better off without me. I feel responsible for the disastrous situation you are now in so please do not mourn my passing.

I now realise that ambition can be a terrible thing. As soon as I received the letter from you telling me about your meeting with the witches I felt like you had to take the throne so we could rule Scotland together. Even though you are a daring man in battle I said you were a cowardly person, which was a step too far. That meant that you would not have the guts too kill King Duncan. When I persuaded you too kill King Duncan I thought I was making you a real man, but all I was doing was making us step into a sea of disaster.

I was very silly and should have had the guts to kill King Duncan myself. The only reason I did not was because he reminded me of my much loved father who was killed in battle. It was just not possible for me to kill him. When you brought the daggers from the Kings chamber I should have just taken them and put them back because I could see you were over come with guilt. I still look down at my hands, arms and finger nails and I can still see King Duncan’s blood flowing through my veins.

Again I feel guilty for the terrible situation you are now in. I feel like you are going to get killed by Macduff, but I will still love you dearly when we are both dead. That is all my fault.

My actions have made us tear Scotland apart. The good man and our friend Banquo murdered and Lady Macduff and her children slain in their home. That is also all my fault. They must have been terrified when the assassins arrived.

Please forgive me for ruining your life. I hope that by taking my own I will end the pain that gnaws at every inch of my body and it is just making me want to kill myself more and more. Please, please, please pray for me as I pray for you my dear husband.

Your loving wife,

Lady Macbeth.

The School We’d Like Journal – William

Bob the Blobfish diary

Wednesday 4th September

At assembly today our teacher Mr Stanley told us about our transition project, the school we’d like. Each table in each class will have to think up 6 ideas and then narrow it down to 1.

First we came up with 1 idea each. These are what we came up with:

Daisy-more sports equipment

William-Assault Course

Jude- laser quest

Kai-zip wire

Brooke-separate changing rooms

Briony-zip wire

Then we did the group work. The six ideas we came up with were:

Chickens

Vegetable patches

Glass walls and doors

Science lab

Computer room

And communication screen out the front of the school

Thursday 5th September

We went for……………Computer room. We stated making questions to ask are head teacher Mr Burford. We got the cost off him for each thing we would need. These are the prices:

Each connecter-£60 we need 23 of them 23x£60=£1380

Electricity=£500

Each workbench-£180 we need 15 of them 15x£180=£2700

Whist William, Jude and Kai were upstairs with Mr Burford Daisy, Briony and Brooke started the groups PowerPoint. When Jude, William and Kai came back downstairs they worked out every thing would cost £4580 so we would have £420 left over.

Friday 6th September

In the morning Jude went to measure the middle classroom so we could work out if we could fit all the computers in. Once we had worked out if we could or not our final verdict was……yes we could fit all of them into the middle classroom great but then we had to work out were the clubs could move to. The verdict was that Wii fit club could carry on because we would leave a gap for the whiteboard which would also mean that teachers would not have to tell people to come back to class when they wanted to show them something. Chess Club will be able to move to the conference room even through Chess Club and School Council meetings are on the same day and are both at lunchtime because School Council meetings can move to a different day. Finally, Breakfast Club can move to the hall because there is nothing going on in the hall in mornings. In the afternoon William started doing the diary while Jude and Kai started doing some designs for the computer room and the girls carried on with the PowerPoint

Monday 9th September

In the morning the whole of class AS looked at a PowerPoint Mr Stanley had made because some of the PowerPoint’s were a bit messy because of the backround, font and there were lots of animations so when people wanted to get to the next piece of the PowerPoint they had to wait because of the animations. Finally some of the PowerPoints could do with a bit of trimming.

After assembly the whole of class AS did some literacy and wrote persuasive letters. Each person had to persuade Mr Burford that there tables idea was the best. There were 4 people writing about their idea to have Bee Hives on the filed, six people were writing about their idea to have a traversing wall on the playground by the steps up to the field, six were writing about their idea to have Chickens, my table of six were writing about the computer room idea and the final table of six were writing about their idea to have Vegetable Patches outside the classrooms. In the afternoon William carried on with the diary, the girls almost finished the PowerPoint and finally the other two boys did some more on the design of the room and started a second one. They started a second one so they could go and see which one people thought was best.

Tuesday 10th September

In the morning everyone finished writing their letters. Once they had finished writing their letters they gave their books to a response partner. Everyone’s response partner did 2 stars and a wish for the person who had given them their book. Then they the book back to the person who had given it to them. The person who had just received their book back so they could see what there response partner had written as a whish and what they had said to do which was something to do with what they had written. If someone had got use more connectives the thing with it may say rewrite 3 sentences with connectives in them. When they had done that and shown Mr Stanley and he had said it is ok he would tell you to go and start typing it up if there was space on the computers. Some people almost finished typing it up. In the afternoon we started the script that would go with our PowerPoint presentation because we had to be finished by Wednesday the 11th lunchtime because we had to practise our presentation in the afternoon. While the girls were doing that William carried on with the group diary.

Wednesday 11th September

In the morning Mr Stanley showed us how to script a PowerPoint so we could write a script for our PowerPoin. We did that for the whole morning. In the afternoon we practiced our presentation and finished the diary. At five to two Mrs Harris called the whole of the class together so we could show the whole of the class our presentation and so each of the other tables could show us their PowerPoint.

Thursday 12th September

In the morning each group did final preparations before Mr Stanley asked them to show him their PowerPoint, so he could give them any final tips before the governors came in and judged all the classes presentations so they could decide which one is best. The one that is best so they can go on Friday into assembly to compete against the other 8 best from the rest of the school. It was very nerveracking for most people. In the end it was fine for everyone and was really fun. Mrs Meredith was very impressed with every group’s presentation so it was a very hard decision. Mr Stanley said he’d tell us the next morning.

Friday 13th September

Once everyone had come in ordered their lunch, put their bags away, sat down and Mr Stanley had done the register he gave the feedback on the day before and said that KFC were the ones who would present to the whole school in the afternoon. After break Mr Stanley gave everyone 15 minutes to finish off their typed letter the group’s diary and start an evaluation of the presentation they had done the day before.

Persuasive letters related to The School We’d like – William

Monday 9th September

Dear Mr Burford,

I am writing to you to outline our tables’ idea. Our idea is to move all the computers to the Middle Classroom. We know this will benefit the whole school. Here are some of the benefits.

Firstly, it will be quieter for other classes so it will be easier to work. I know it is very important to you for children to do well at there work and for them to be very productive. It will also mean that the teachers and children will be able to hear each other more clearly, so it will benefit everyone. Furthermore there will be more concourse space so it will be less crowded when going out to break, coming back from assembly or coming back in from break. If you wanted you could get some storage so you could sort all the stuff which is in the Middle Classroom at the moment.

It will also mean you will not have to wait as long as we do for help. All clubs will be able to move if needed. Wii Fit club would still be able to fit in as we have worked out that all the computers will be able to fit round the edge while still leaving a gap for the whiteboard. Chess Club will be able to move to the conference room even through Chess Club and School Council meetings because School Council meetings could move to a different day like Wednesday. This would also mean that people who want to do Chess Club and be a member of the School Council can. Bonus!

To conclude I have a set of questions that I have put together to ask you Mr Burford. Do you want everyone to do well at their work? Do you want your students to grow up and be sensible? Do you want your students to get a good job when they are older? Now I know what your answer will be to all of these questions, it will be yes won’t it?

You are a very clever head so I know you will make the right decision and will make either the school better or keep it the same. I do not mind if you say yes or no. I hope you agree with our table’s idea. Only a fool would pass by an opportunity like this and you are not a fool!!

Yours sincerely,

William L.
